China has warned that it will detain Americans if it does not sue Chinese students
Rashidul Islam: U.S. citizens will be detained in China if the lawsuits against Chinese students in various U.S. courts are not dropped. That’s according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
China is sending such messages to the United States through various channels. On September 14, the U.S. Department of the Interior issued a warning barring U.S. citizens from traveling to China. It said China could put pressure on the United States and other countries by detaining them.
The White House said in an email to the US State Department that it was putting pressure on China to take action against Americans living in China. The Chinese embassy in Washington did not comment.
In July, the FBI arrested three Chinese nationals. The allegations against them were that they applied for a visa to study in the United States after becoming a member of China’s People’s Liberation Army. They have been charged with visa fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a 250,000 fine. Angry China is taking retaliatory measures.
Visas for more than a thousand Chinese students studying in the United States have been revoked. Although the United States has cited security concerns, China has called it a human rights violation.
