Formation of National Statistical Advisory Council in setting priorities
Bashar Nuru: The government has set up a ‘National Statistical Advisory Council’ to provide advice or guidance on setting national priorities for statistics in order to upgrade the country’s national statistics system to world standards.
 The cabinet division formed a 16-member council with the planning minister as its president and published a gazette on Tuesday.
 Apart from the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, he has been appointed as a member of the Council of Secretaries of Local Government, Finance and Statistics and Information Management. Chairman of the National Board of Revenue, Member of General Economics Department of Planning Commission, Director General of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Director General of National Population Research and Training Institute, Director General of Bangladesh Bureau of Education Information and Statistics, Director General of Bangladesh Development Research Institute, President of Bangladesh Industrial and Commercial Association, University of Dhaka. Chairman, Research Director of Bangladesh Development Research Institute Binayak Sen, Professor Bazlul Haque Khandaker of the Department of Economics, Dhaka University, Professor Syed Shahadat Hossain of the Institute of Statistical Research and Training have also been made members of the council. The Additional Secretary (Information Management) of the Department of Statistics and Information Management will act as the Member Secretary of the Council.
 The order said the council should provide necessary advice to upgrade Bangladesh’s national statistics system to world-class and to collect more precisely useful information for national needs. Advise on setting priorities for census, survey or other statistical activities in the light of changing contexts and necessary considerations. The council has also been asked to give necessary advice on budget, implementation of work plan, schedule, procedures etc. of various censuses conducted under BBS.
 Apart from giving advice on various needs and requirements of the Department of Statistics and Information Management and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, it is necessary to give advice on statistics and other relevant matters if necessary.
 The council may, if necessary, co-opt the head of any person or organization involved with statistics as a member. The council must meet at least twice a year.
